Supporting UK Community programme
31st December 2009

The MARS IN THE COMMUNITY programme is going from strength to strength, the UK Corporate Affairs team is delighted to report. “Alignment to the business strategies is key to the programme’s success,” commented Anita Herbert. “2010 will see us support and bring alive our brand activities locally and continue to support projects which complement some of the priorities across our UK businesses.” Supporting good causes through financial donations is one element of the programme.
The UK SIMs and Works Councils review applications quarterly, based on healthy active lifestyles, the environment and pet welfare. Mars supports its associates through volunteering, match-funding, product donation and payroll giving.

Fifteen hundred associates across Mars in the UK have helped their local community this year by volunteering or fundraising. Supported by the MARS IN THE COMMUNITY programme, this level of enthusiastic involvement by associates sets a record – and it’s one that the UK Corporate Affairs
team, is keen to build on in 2010.

“The number of associates applying for support has increased this year by 60 per cent –
quite fantastic!” Anita said. This year, UK associates raised £45,000 through fund-raising activities, which was match-funded by the business, adding another £7,000. Sixty charities benefited, chosen by UK associates.

Associates support charities or charitable organisations close to their hearts and choose charities across a variety of causes. “In the current climate, giving back to communities by volunteering is a mutually beneficial activity, which is not only cost efficient but rewarding and fun.

“We are now planning our 2010 activities to build on this year’s successes and will be communicating them early next year.
