Success story

Furze Platt Senior School Youth Club, Berkshire

About the group

Furze Platt Senior School is a mixed comprehensive school in Maidenhead, which runs a youth club. The Youth Club is open to all, but particularly aimed at students who do not engage with others, and often do not do well at school. The group wish to provide extra-curricular activities outside of the school curriculum, in an informal setting where they can make positive friendships as well as learning new skills.

What the project was supposted to do

The group applied for a grant to run a circus skills workshop, and for circus skills equipment which would allow them to take part in the Maidenhead Carnival parade and provide circus skills workshops in the future.

What the project did

The circus skills were part of a workshop to help boost the group’s self esteem and their perception of themselves. None of the 13 young people taking part had any previous skills, but by the end of the day had mastered a skill in various areas including Diablo, flower sticks and juggling. The workshop gave the young people confidence to take part in the Maidenhead Carnival procession and a celebration assembly before the end of term. The workshop has also improved the young people’s social skills, and they are intending to run a lunch time club to teach their skills to other pupils.

“the funding enabled our students to contribute positively within their local community by taking part in the local carnival parade”

Desrene Carty – Youth Club Manager
